This article is a commentary for the British public: to explain how ChatGPT is poised to reshape universities and learning, to explore both the promise and the peril, and to invite an informed national conversation about the future of education.
ChatGPT and its contemporaries are not simply “smart chatbots.” They represent a quantum leap in accessible, high-quality natural language generation. Students and academics alike now have a tool that can draft essays, suggest arguments, summarise literature, generate code, translate between languages, answer questions, propose outlines, or even brainstorm research ideas. The barrier to entry is low: many can access this via a web interface or API integration.
In higher education, where the core activities are textual: writing, analysis, argumentation, explanation, exploration of knowledge—ChatGPT is a direct challenge to traditional assumptions about how knowledge is produced, assessed, and taught.
